The author investigates the structure of non-trivial, hereditary, coreflective subcategories of the category \({\mathcal T}op\) of topological spaces (i.e., those full subcategories of \({\mathcal T}op\) that are closed under the formation of subspaces, quotients and topological sums and that contain at least one space that is not a topological sum of indiscrete spaces). He characterizes these subcategories as precisely the coreflective hulls of non-empty classes of filter spaces (i.e., of spaces that contain precisely one non-isolated point). He characterizes the atoms in the (large) lattice of these subcategories; provides examples of two non-trivial, hereditary, coreflective subcategories such that the coreflective hull of their union fails to be hereditary (and, as a consequence, has no hereditary, coreflective kernel); and demonstrates that the category of finitely-generated topological spaces is the hereditary coreflective kernel simultaneously of the category of compactly-generated spaces and of the category of pseudoradial spaces.
