This is a review paper describing the use of the Sylvester equation in several synthesis problems. The Sylvester equation is the equation \(AV-VJ=K\), in the unknown matrix \(V\). The solutions to several control problems do depend on finding the solution of a suitable Sylvester equation which satisfies additional constraints. In sect. 2 the authors review some problems which are solvable in terms of the Sylvester equation: the synthesis of reduced order observers and compensators (also in the presence of disturbances); the computation of output feedbacks and the assignability of transmission zeros. In sect. 3 the authors examine the solvability of the problems presented in sect. 2. The paper has a rich bibliography.
