Let \(a\) and \(b\) be two distinct elements and \(C^*\) a cocircuit in a \(3\)-connected matroid. The author proves that there is a circuit in the matroid that contains \(a\) and \(b\) and meets \(C^*\), and that this condition, although its converse is false, can also be used to characterize \(3\)-connected matroids.
