Let G be the Heisenberg group, B the unit cylinder in G and F a continuous, notation invariant and positive definite (p.d.) function on distribution on 2B; the existence of a p.d. extension of F is proved by means of an integral formula and as a special case of a similar extension problem for kernel functions on \(B\times B\). In the general case of a Lie group with Lie algebra \({\mathfrak g}\) it is proved that the extension problem for p.d. functions and distributions is closely related to an extension problem for certain hermitian representations of the universal enveloping algebra of \({\mathfrak g}\).
