Suppose that E is a real Banach space, and let K(E) denote the set of non-empty convex subsets of E that are closed and bounded in the norm topology. It is well known that K(E) becomes a complete metric space under the Pompeiu-Hausdorff metric. The authors study various topological properties of K(E) and prove, among other things, that (i) if E is reflexive, then K(E) is weakly complete; (ii) if E is separable and reflexive, then every bounded sequence in K(E) has a weak limit point (an extension of Blaschke's selection theorem). The authors then apply their results to problems of best approximation and show, among other things, that if E is a real Hilbert space and d is a positive integer, then the set of all those members of K(E) which generate linear subspaces of dimension \(\leq d\) is weakly complete.
