The background of the paper under review is provided by the problem of finding conditions for the existence of a Kähler metric on \(X\) with constant curvature in the Kähler class \([c_1(L)]\), where \((X,L)\) is a projective manifold polarized by an ample line bundle \(L\). This problem is approached here by means of the idea of moment map from symplectic geometry. Among the achievements of the present paper we mention a differential geometric method to evaluate the Chow weight, an algebro-geometric proof of a theorem of \textit{S.~Zhang} [Compos. Math. 104, No. 1, 77--105 (1996; Zbl 0924.11055)], and an algebraic geometric interpretation of the Futaki character. It is noteworthy that the paper also includes a simple method to construct many examples of unstable manifolds.
