This paper contains details of results previously announced by the first author [Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 20, No.1, 45-48 (1989)]. These results form a common generalisation to those of the second author [Math. Ann. 213, 129-152 (1975; Zbl 0284.32019)] on principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface X and those of \textit{V. B. Mehta} and \textit{C. S. Seshadri} [Math. Ann. 248, 205-239 (1980; Zbl 0454.14006)] on vector bundles with parabolic structure over X. More precisely, the authors generalise the concept of stability to parabolic G-bundles over X, where G is a connected reductive algebraic group over \({\mathbb{C}}\), and prove two theorems about such bundles. - The first asserts that a parabolic G-bundle is stable if and only if it arises from an irreducible representation of an appropriate discrete subgroup of PSL(2,\({\mathbb{R}})\) in a maximal compact subgroup of G. - The second one asserts the existence of a coarse moduli space for equivalence classes of semistable parabolic G-bundles of fixed topological type and having a fixed parabolic structure at a point \(x_ 0\) of X. The proofs are similar to those in the papers cited above.
