The author studies non-abelian difference sets with multiplier-1 and generalizes some results from the abelian to the non-abelian case. In particular, the order \(n=k-\lambda\) must be a square; if \(n\) has some prime divisor \(p\) which does not divide \(k\), then the difference set meets each conjugacy class. These results are then applied to study generalized quadrangles with \(s=t\) which admit an automorphism group \(G\) acting regularly on the point set. Such a GQ gives rise to a difference set with multiplier \(-1\) and parameters \(v=(1+s)(s^ 2+1)\), \(k=s^ 2+s+1\) and \(\lambda=s+1\). The author then proves various non-existence results, in particular for the case where \(s=t\) is even; e.g., then \(G\) cannot be nilpotent or Frobenius, and no example can exist if \(s^ 2+1\) is a non-square.
