The cut locus of a simple closed curve C in a plane M with complete Riemannian metric was described in \textit{P. Hartmann} [Am. J. Math. 86, 705-727 (1964; Zbl 0128.161)]. The present author gives more precise information under the additional assumption that total curvature C(M) exists. For example: (i) The level curves \(S(t):=\{x\in M\), \(d(x,C)=t\}\) are circles for large t, (ii) \(\lim_{t\to \infty}\sum_{x\in S(t)}\beta (x)=0\), where \(\beta\) (x) is the angular size of C at x, and, (iii) \(\lim_{t\to \infty}length^ 2(S(t))/Area(Interior\) of \(S(t))=2(2-C(M))\).
