Let \(G\) be a simply connected semisimple algebraic group with Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\) and let \(e\in \mathfrak g\) be a regular nilpotent element. The centralizer \(G_e\) is known to be isomorphic to the product \(Z(G)\times G_e^0\), where \(Z(G)\) is the centre of \(G\) and \(G_e^0\) is a commutative unipotent group of dimension rank \(G\) (the ``nilpotent torus''). In the paper under review, the algebras of invariants \(k[X]^{G_e}\) and \(k[X]^{G_e^0}\) are studied. It is shown that \(\text{Spec }k[X]^{G_e^0}\) has rational singularities whenever \(X\) does so, using results of \textit{R. K. Brylinski} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 2, 517--533 (1989; Zbl 0729.17005)]. Then, the null-cone for \(G_e\)-invariants is described in terms of 1-parameter subgroups, and a connection with the null-cone for a maximal torus is established. As a consequence, the author obtains that the null-cone relative to \(G_e\) is never reduced.
