The authors present a physically sound formulation of standard linear viscoelastic solid with integer and fractional order rate laws for a finite set of internal variables. A time integration scheme, based on the generalized midpoint rule, is employed for the calculation of constitutive response. Four examples are studied in detail: (i) a fixed-free viscoelastic uniform bar subjected to a step load applied at the initial instant; (ii) a rigid railway sleeper on a viscoelastic ballast material; (iii) the dynamic response of a sleeper-ballast-system resting on a smooth rigid ground; (iv) a moving load simulating over-rolling of a high-speed train. Numerical results are presented in diagrams.
