Dye's theorem on orbit equivalence has been generalized by many authors, and here the authors generalize versions due to Vershik, Livshitz and Lodkin and others (see \textit{A. A. Lodkin} and \textit{A. M. Vershik }[in: Operator algebras and their connections with topology and ergodic theory, Proc. Conf., Busteni/Rom, 1983, Lect. Notes Math. 1132, 331--346 (1985; Zbl 0584.28008)] and \textit{A. M. Vershik} and \textit{A. N. Livshitz} [in: Representation theory and dynamical systems, Adv. Sov. Math. 9, 185--204 (1992; Zbl 0770.28013)]). Here it is shown that every ergodic nonsingular dynamical system on a standard measure space is orbit equivalent to a Markov odometer, which may be taken to be uniquely ergodic. Markov odometers are defined on Bratteli-Vershik diagrams.
