This paper is about certain one-dimensional differential-difference operators, which emerge as symmetrizations of differential operators on the positive real line. More precisely, the author introduces a symmetrization procedure that is inspired by a special decomposition of Sturm-Liouville operators. Examples for this construction are Jacobi differential operators and Jacobi-Dunkl differential-difference operators, both of compact and non-compact types. Starting with the differential operator \(\mathfrak{d}f(x):=p(x)f'(x)+q(x)f(x)\), whose formal adjoint is denoted by \(\mathfrak{d}^{\dagger}\), the derivative \(\mathfrak{D}\) is defined as follows: \(\mathfrak{D}f:=\mathfrak{d}(f_{\text{even}})-\mathfrak{d}^{\dagger}(f_{\text{odd}})\). Next, the weak \(\mathfrak{d}\)- and \(\mathfrak{D}\)-derivatives are investigated and compared. Finally, the \(\mathfrak{D}\)-Sobolev spaces are studied, with particular emphasis on minimal and maximal operators and on Friedrichs extensions.
