Let \(\mathfrak{g}\) be a simple complex Lie algebra, not necessarily simply laced, and let \(U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{g}})\) be the untwisted quantum affine algebra, where \(q\) is not a root of unity. A cluster algebra \(\mathcal{A}\) is constructed from some quivers associated with the Dynkin diagram of \(\mathfrak{g}\). On the other hand, it is considered a tensor category \(\mathcal{C}^-\) containing up to spectral shifts all the irreducible finite dimensional representations of \(U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{g}})\). An algorithm calculating the \(q\)-character of an arbitrary Kirillov-Reshetikhin module in \(\mathcal{C}^-\) is presented, by using the combinatorics of \(\mathcal{A}\). A geometric \(q\)-character formula for tensor products of Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules is obtained. The authors prove that \(\mathcal{A}\) is isomorphic to the Grothendieck ring of \(\mathcal{C}^-\), and they conjecture that this isomorphism maps all cluster monomials of \(\mathcal{A}\) to the classes of certain simple objects of \(\mathcal{C}^-\), and that the geometric character formula extends to all these simple objects.
