    Let \(M=N\otimes_{\theta}{\mathbb{Z}}\) be a type \(III_{\lambda}\) factor in its canonical decomposition as a discrete crossed product of a type \(II_{\infty}\) factor N, with a trace \(\tau\) scaled by the automorphism \(\theta\) \((\tau \circ \theta =\lambda \tau)\). Then the \(L^ p\) spaces of M (as defined by Haagerup) are isomorphic to the spaces \(L^ p(M)=(x\in \tilde N| \theta (x)=\lambda^{1/p}x)\), where \(\tilde N\) is the algebra of \(\tau\)-measurable operators (affiliated with N). Every \(x\in L^ p(M)\) decomposes uniquely into \(x=\sum^{\infty}_{n=- \infty}\lambda^{n/p}\theta^{-n}(y)\) where \(y\in N\) and \(\lambda^{1/p}q\leq | y| \leq q\) for some \(\theta\)-wandering projection \(q\in N\) (i.e. \(q\theta^ n(q)=0\) for all \(n\neq 0)\). Moreover, a projection \(r\in N\) is the spectral projection of an \(L^ p(M)\) operator iff r belongs to an abelian \(\theta\)-invariant subalgebra of N on which \(\tau\) is semifinite.
