A new local extrapolation method for essentially nonoscillatory (ENO) schemes for the numerical approximation of hyperbolic conservation laws is derived. Conservativity is kept and symmetry of symmetric waves is preserved. Additionally, two artificial compression procedures are described to obtain sharp resolution of contact discontinuities.
