    Let \(Y,Y_ 0,Z,Z_ 0\) be real Banach spaces, \(Y_ 0,Z_ 0\) be separable, such that the quadruplet \((Y,Y_ 0;Z,Z_ 0)\) is a complementary system. The author considers the nonlinear eigenvalue problem \[ (*)\quad Tu=\lambda Su,\quad f(u)=r,\quad(u,\lambda)\in dom(T)\times {\mathbb{R}} \] \((r>0)\) for \(T:Y\supset dom(T)\to Z(Y_ 0\subset dom(T))\) a pseudomonotone potential operator in \((Y,Y_ 0;Z,Z_ 0)\) with potential f \((f(0)=0)\), and \(S:Y\to Z_ 0\) a \(\sigma(Y,Z_ 0)\), \(\| \|_{Z_ 0}\) sequentially continuous potential operator. Under certain additional hypotheses, similar to those, used in the reflexive case, Ljusternik-Schnirelman theory, applied to finite dimensional approximations, yields the existence of a sequence of different solutions of (*) for S,T being odd and of at least one solution, otherwise. As an application the nonlinear boundary value problem \[ \nabla \cdot(F'(| \nabla u|)\nabla u/| \nabla u|)+\lambda G'(u)=0,\quad u| \partial \Omega =0 \] is treated for a bounded domain \(\Omega\) with Lipschitz boundary, a smooth, strictly convex N-function \(F:{\mathbb{R}}\to {\mathbb{R}}\) and \(G\in C^{\infty}({\mathbb{R}},{\mathbb{R}}).\)
