    The wake behind a planing surface is studied from the point of view of classical notions from the theory of small-amplitude waves. An analytic solution is known [(*) \textit{A. S. Peters}, Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 2, 123-148 (1949; Zbl 0035.422)] to the problem of the motion over the surface of a liquid of a disturbance pulse. A body planing along the boundary of its contact with a liquid generates a pressure distributed in a certain manner and moving together with the body over the free surface. In a linear approximation, the pressure of the body on the liquid can always be represented as a simple superposition of pulses giving an already known effect, which makes it possible to generalize the result of (*) and solve the planing problem. Depending on the Froude number and the aspect ratio of the planing surface, different modifications of the solution to this problem are possible.
