Let R be an integral domain with quotient field K. It is proved that each subring of R having quotient field K is a universally going-down domain [in the sense of the author and \textit{M. Fontana}, Arch. Math. 42, 426-429 (1984; Zbl 0526.13007)] if and only if either R is isomorphic to an overring of \({\mathbb{Z}}\) or \(R=K\) is an algebraic field extension of a finite field. This result sharpens the corollary of the author in Math. Japonica 32, 11-15 (1987; Zbl 0618.13006).
