The main result of this paper provides the following orthogonal decomposition for weak\(^*\)-closed inner ideals in a \(JBW^*\)-triple: Let \(A\) be a \(JBW^*\)-triple and let \(J\) be a weak\(^*\)-closed inner ideal in \(A\). Then there exist uniquely a weak\(^*\)-closed ideal \(I\) in \(A\) and a faithful weak\(^*\)-closed inner ideal \(K\) in \(A\), orthogonal to \(I\), such that \(J= I\bigoplus_MK\). In fact, \(I\) is the central kernel \(\kappa(J)\) of \(J\), i.e., the largest weak\(^*\)-closed ideal \(I\) in \(A\) contained in \(J\), and \(K= I^\perp\cap J\), where \(I^\perp= \{a\in A:\{IaA\}= 0\}\) is the annihilator of \(I\), is called the faithful part \(f(J)\) of \(J\). The properties of \(f(J)\) are studied and applied to the cases in which \(J\) is the Peirce-two space or Peirce-zero space corresponding to a tripotent in \(A\), and to the case in which \(A\) is a von Neumann algebra.
