The expanding universe (Q6032727)

In a series of contributions, the editors of this journal publish basic and famous research papers not easily available for the public or written in other languages than English. The paper of G. Lemaître presented here in English translation, was published 1933 and was of enormous influence on cosmology. The short comments of the editor on the historic and scientific background are valuable. The translation was done competently.
