The action of \(\sqrt{-\Delta}\) on distributions is examined within the context of weighted Sobolev spaces. The following results are obtained: (1) \(\sqrt{-\Delta}\) is continuous from \({\mathcal S}(\mathbb{R}^n)\) to \(L^{2,s} (\mathbb{R}^n)\) for \(s<{n\over 2}+1\) (2) \(\sqrt{-\Delta}\) is continuous from \(H^{k,s}(\mathbb{R}^n)\) to \(H^{k-1,t} (\mathbb{R}^n)\) for \(s>-{n\over 2}-1\) and some \(t\). Here \(H^{k,s} (\mathbb{R}^n)\) is the weighted Sobolev space defined using the norm \(\|(1+ |x|^2)^{s/2} (1-\Delta)^{k/2} n\|_{L^2}\).
