\textit{V. Camillo} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 90, 186-188 (1984; Zbl 0538.16035)] has shown that R is Morita equivalent to S (denoted \(R\approx S)\) if and only if RF M(R)\(\cong RF M(S)\), where RFM(R) denotes the ring of \(N\times N\) row-finite matrices over R. Using different methods, \textit{W. Stephenson} [thesis, Bedford College (1965)] has shown that \(R\approx S\) if and only if FM(R)\(\cong FM(S)\), where FM(R)\(\subseteq RF M(R)\) denotes those matrices having finitely many nonzero entries. Let FC(R)\(\subseteq RFM(R)\) denote the matrices with finitely many nonzero columns. Define \(Ma(R)=\{T|\) FM(R)\(\subseteq T\subseteq RF M(R)\), T a ring (not necessarily unital)\(\}\), and define \(FMa(R)=\{T\in Ma(R)|\) \(T\subseteq FC(R)\}\). For \(T\in Ma(R)\) and T'\(\in Ma(S)\) we say an isomorphism \(\phi\) :T\(\to T'\) is bounded in case \(\phi (e_{11})\in FC(S)\), where \(e_{11}\) is the usual matrix idempotent in FM(R). Then the following are equivalent: 1. R is Morita equivalent to S. 2. There exists a containment-preserving bijection \(\Phi\) :Ma(R)\(\to Ma(S)\) with \(\Phi\) \(T\cong T\) for all \(T\in Ma(R)\). 3. There exist \(T\in Ma(R)\), T'\(\in Ma(S)\), and an isomorphism \(\sigma\) :T\(\to T'\) such that both \(\sigma\) and \(\sigma^{-1}\) are bounded. 4. There exist \(T\in FMa(R)\) and T'\(\in FMa(S)\) with \(T\cong T'\). If in addition both R and S satisfy certain structural conditions, then also 5. There exist \(T\in Ma(R)\) and T'\(\in Ma(S)\) with \(T\cong T'\). (Examples of such structural conditions include ''simple'', ''semiperfect'', and ''Dedekind''.)
