    The authors provide a proof of the following identity which was discovered while working for a solution of problem No.6418 [Am. Math. Mon. 90, 60 (1983)] for all x,y which do not make denominator 0: \[ \sum^{2N-1}_{r=1}(xy)^ r\exp (i\pi r^ 2/2N)[\{x \exp (i\pi r/2N)- x^{-1}\exp (-i\pi r/2N)\}^{-1}+ \] \[ +\{y \exp (i\pi r/2N)-y^{-1} \exp (-i\pi r/2N)\}^{-1}]= \] \[ =x^{2N}y(y^{2N}- 1)(x^{2N}+1)^{-1}(y^ 2-1)^{-1}+y^{2N}x(x^{2N}- 1)(y^{2N}+1)^{-1}(x^ 2-1)^{-1}+ \] \[ +(xy)^{2N+1}(y^{2N}+1)^{-1}\sum^{N-1}_{t=1}y^{2t}[x \exp (i\pi t/N)-x^{-1} \exp (-i\pi t/N)]^{-1} \] \[ +((xy)^{2N}+1)(x^{2N}+1)^{-1}\sum^{N-1}_{t=1}x^{2t}[y \exp (i\pi t/N)-y^{-1} \exp (-i\pi t/N)]^{-1}. \] Some special cases of the above identity leading to trigonometric finite sums are also discussed.
