To an indirected graph \(\Gamma\), with vertex set \(V\) and edge set \(E\), one can associate a right angled Artin group \(A_{\Gamma}\) defined by the presentation \(\langle V : v w = w v \text{ for } v, w \in E \rangle\). One can give analogous definitions for associative, Lie, and restricted Lie algebras, and other algebraic objects. In the paper under review, the authors give an eminently readable, attractive, systematic treatment of algebraic objects with such free partially commuting generators, with the aim of ``[giving] a complete description of many relevant properties and relations, offering modern and accessible proofs.'' Among the new results, they determine the exponent-\(p\) and lower \(p\)-central series of right angled Artin groups.
