The authors study the spectral properties of the Hamiltonian operators \[ H(\omega)=-\Delta +\sum_{x\in \omega}v(\cdot -x) \] on \(L^2({\mathbb R}^d)\) for suitable functions \(v\) and certain uniformly discrete subsets \(\omega\) of \({\mathbb R}^d\) called Delone sets. Such operators arise in the study of disordered solids. It is shown that under some mild conditions, there is a dense \(G_\delta\)-set of \(\omega\)'s (this refers to a topology on the set of all Delone sets) for which \(H(\omega)\) exhibits a purely singular continuous spectral component. The main tool used in the paper is a strengthening of Simon's Wonderland theorem. This result is originally about operator spaces. Here, the authors follow a different approach. They consider certain sets in the space of Borel measures on a nice metric space and show that these are \(G_\delta\)-sets. This is done concerning the set of singular measures (with respect to a given comparison measure) and also the set of continuous measures. Then, by standard continuity arguments, this regularity property is pulled back to spaces of operators. As a byproduct of their approach, the authors obtain that the set of singular continuous measures on a Euclidean space is a dense \(G_\delta\)-set in the space of measures.
