Let \(X\) be a Banach space, \(Y\) a subspace of \(X\) and let \(\Gamma\) be an infinite set. The authors investigate the consequences of the assumption that an operator \(T\) embeds \(\ell_\infty(\Gamma)\) into \(X\) isomorphically with the assumption that \(T(\ell_\infty(\Gamma)) \subset Y\). The first main result is a generalization of the recent result by \textit{Gh. Rusu} [Bul. Acad. Ştiinţe Repub. Mold., Mat. 2000, No. 2(33), 85--91 (2000; Zbl 1028.46028)], and it states the following. Theorem 1. Let \(T:\ell_\infty(\Gamma) \to X\) be an isomorphic embedding such that \(T(\ell_\infty(\Gamma)) \subset Y\). Then \(c_0(\Gamma^{\aleph_0})\) embeds isomorphically into \(X/Y\) if one of the following conditions holds: (1) \(Y\) does not contain a copy of \(\ell_\infty\). (2) \(Y\) does not contain a copy of \(\ell_\infty(\Gamma)\) and \(\text{card}(\Gamma) = \text{card}(\Gamma)^{\aleph_0}\). The next main result here states the following. Theorem 2. If \(T: \ell_\infty(\Gamma)\to X\) is an isomorphic embedding such that \(T(c_o(\Gamma)) = Y \cap \operatorname{Im} T\), and \(P:X\to \operatorname{Im} T\) is a projection such that \(P(Y) \subset Y\), then \(X/Y\) contains a complemented copy of \(\ell_\infty(\Gamma)/c_0(\Gamma)\). The above result is further specified in general real Banach lattices and in particular in the space \(L_\infty[0,1]\), Orlicz and Marcinkiewicz spaces. Thus for example, we have that the space \(L_\infty[0,1]/C[0,1]\) contains a complemented copy of \(\ell_\infty/c_0\). Let us also present here the analogous result for Marcinkiewicz spaces. Recall that the Marcinkiewicz space \(M(\Psi)\) is the collection of all Lebesgue measurable functions \(f: [0,1] \to \mathbb{R}\) such that \[ \|f\|_\Psi = \sup_{t\in (0,1)} \frac{1}{\Psi(t)} \int_0^t f^* <\infty, \] where \(f^*\) is the decreasing rearrangement of \(f\) and \(\Psi : [0,1]\to [0,\infty)\) is concave, continuous, and \(\Psi(0) = 0\). By \(M_0(\Psi)\), we denote the subset of all order continuous elements in \(M(\Psi)\). The authors obtain the following result. Corollary. Let \(M_0(\Psi) \neq \{0\}\). Then the quotient Banach lattice \(M(\Psi)/M_0(\Psi)\) contains a lattice-isometric and positively \(1\)-complemented copy of \(\ell_\infty/c_0\).
