The main object of the paper under review is an \(S\)-arithmetic subgroup \(\Gamma\) of a linear algebraic group \(G\) defined over a number field. The goal is to establish a local-global principle for some finiteness properties of \(\Gamma\) by relating them to compactness properties of \(p\)-adic completions \(G_p\) studied by \textit{H. Abels} and \textit{A. Tiemeyer} [Transform. Groups 2, No. 2, 119-135 (1997)]. This gives an alternative proof of finiteness theorems by \textit{A. Borel} and \textit{J.-P. Serre} [Topology 15, 211-232 (1976; Zbl 0338.20055)]\ (for \(G\) reductive) and P. Abramenko (for \(P\) a parabolic subgroup of \(G\)).
