The paper extends to semiprime rings some commutativity theorems for prime rings with derivation, due to \textit{I. N. Herstein} [Can. Math. Bull. 21, 369-370 (1978; Zbl 0412.16018)], and to the reviewer and the author [Acta Math. Hung. 66, No. 4, 337-343 (1995; Zbl 0822.16033)]. Two of the theorems read as follows: (I) Let \(R\) be a 2-torsion-free semiprime ring and \(U\) a nonzero two-sided ideal of \(R\). If \(R\) admits a derivation \(d\) such that \(d(U)\neq\{0\}\) and \([d(U),d(U)]=\{0\}\), then \(R\) contains a nonzero central ideal; (II) Let \(R\) be a semiprime ring and \(U\) a nonzero right ideal of \(R\). If \(R\) admits a nonzero derivation \(d\) such that \(d(x)d(y)+d(yx)=d(y)d(x)+d(xy)\) for all \(x,y\in U\), then \(d(U)\) centralizes \([U,U]\).
