This article deals with elliptic variational inequalities with discontinuous nonlinearities. More precisely is considered: the problem of finding \(u\in K\) satisfying \(\forall v\in K\) the inequality: \[ \begin{multlined}\sum_{i,j=1}^n \int_\Omega a_{i,j}(x)u_{x_i}(v-u)_{x_j}dx\\ +\int_\Omega (a_0(x)-\lambda_0)u(x)(v-u)(x)dx +\int_\Omega g(x,u)(v-u)(x)dx\geq0 \end{multlined}\tag{1} \] where \[ Lu(x)=-\sum_{i,j=1}^n(a_{i,j}(x)u_{x_i})_{x_j}+a_0(x)u(x), \] \[ K=\{v\in W_0^{1,2}(\Omega)\mid v\geq \psi(x) \text{ a. e. in }\Omega, \] \(\Omega\) denotes a smooth, bounded domain in \(\mathbb R^n\). The authors require ellipticity conditions on the operator \(L\), smoothness assumptions on the data, suitable hypotheses on the nonlinearity of \(g\) (\(g\) is ``superpositionally measurable'', it has only ``special'' jump dicontinuities and satisfies the ``strong A1- condition'') and prove that there exists a function \(u\in W^{2,q}(\Omega)\cap K\) satisfying condition (1). The authors replace the inequality (1) by an elliptic boundary value problem whose strong solutions are solution of the original problem (1). The authors construct a sequence of approximate boundary value problems, whose solutions are obtained by the variational method, and prove the convergence of the solutions of the approximate problems to a strong solution of the boundary value problem (see problem (2) and (3) in the paper).
