For a given linear time-invariant plant with state-space realization, we have to find a fixed, low-order controller in the presence of a disturbance. The design is based on linear matrix inequalities (LMI). The following procedure is presented: First, solve the convex problem of finding a full-order controller. Second, use this solution as an initial condition to find the controller with the order reduced by one. Third, return to the second step, until the resulting reduced-order controller is the desired one, using a projection algorithm. An example of a two-mass-spring system of fifth order is stabilized using a second-order controller.
