Let A be the generator of a strongly continuous semigroup \(\{\) P(t): \(t\geq 0\}\) of continuous linear operators defined on a Banach space X. Let C be a \(\|.\|\)-closed convex subset of X and suppose that for every x in D(A) there exists a sequence \((x_ n: n\in ({\mathbb{N}}))\) in D(A) with the following properties: \(\lim \| x-x_ n\| =\lim \| Ax-Ax_ n\| =0\) and every \(x_ n\) has a best approximation in C (with respect to \(\|.\|)\) which belongs to D(A). Suppose also that there exists a constant \(\omega\) such that \(\| P(t)x\| \leq \exp (\omega t)\| x\|,\) \(t\geq 0\), \(x\in X\). Let \(P(t)C\subseteq C\) for all \(t\geq 0\) if and only if, for every v in \(C\cap D(A),\) the vector Av belongs to the \(\|.\|\)-closure of [0,\(\infty)(C-v)\). Related results and some applications are given in case C is the positive cone in a Banach lattice. A recent account on positivity preserving semigroups can be found in ''Positive semigroups of operators and applications'' edited by \textit{O. Bratteli} and \textit{P. Jørgensen}, a special issue of Acta Appl. Math. 2, 213-219 (1984; Zbl 0529.47024). Some of the results mentioned above can be found in ''Generators of strongly continuous semigroups'', Res. Notes Math. 115 (1985) written by the author.
