The authors give two definitions of the Nielsen number, a homotopy invariant which provides a lower bound for the number of fixed points of a map under homotopies. \(q\)-admissible maps and \(q\)-epi maps are defined for which homotopy stability and restriction property are given. Then the Nielsen number is also defined using Wecken classes, as the cardinality of the set of essential Wecken classes. Natural properties of a coincidence degree are established also in the case of Nielsen numbers in the Wecken sense. Finally, the authors show that these definitions do not coincide and correspond to different approaches to coincidence degree.
