The author discusses stability problems of the motion of a mechanical system with potential, gyroscopic, dissipative, and nonconservative positional (NP) forces. The first chapter of the paper is devoted to stability motion of general systems with such forces, a great attention is given to the influence of NP forces. A construction of Lyapunov's function and estimation of the attraction domain are given. The second chapter deals with NP forces in gyroscopic systems. Stability problems are investigated for a rotor on a flexible shaft, for an unbalanced rotor, and for gimbal suspension gyroscope under the action of perturbing moments. In the third chapter, auto-excited vibrations in nonlinear systems are studied, namely, in Ziegler's pendulum, in a rotor mounted on a flexible shaft, and in some gyroscopic systems. The last chapter is devoted to some aspects of stabilization problem. They are: finding the conditions which guarantee stabilization of unstable system by applying forces of certain structure; formulating necessary and sufficient conditions for motion stabilization; studying the feasibility of motion stabization by means of parametric excitation.
