This paper present a numerical technique which provides more accurate contact stress predictions than other known methods. The novel contact deflection algorithm is developed by combining the finite element method with Overhauser splines. The contact area is approximated by Overhauser spline interpolation functions over boundary nodes, which results in a smooth geometrical description -- the fact crucial to the accuracy of contact stress analysis. A one-parametric family of curves is used to model the conctacting surfaces, providing the \(C^1\) boundary continuity and exact boundary conditions. The authors describe the implementation of the corresponding finite element code, and discuss benefits and drawbacks of the proposed approach.
