The main result is the following: A complete hypersurface in hyperbolic space with constant mean curvature and nonnegative Ricci curvature has nonnegative sectional curvature. The remainder of the paper is concerned with technical attempts in order to draw further consequences from this. However, by the theorem of A. D. Alexandrov and, in particular, by combining the works of \textit{M. P. do Carmo} and \textit{H. B. Lawson} [Duke Math. J. 50, 995-1003 (1983; Zbl 0534.53049)] and \textit{S. B. Alexander} and \textit{R. J. Currier} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 41, No. 2, 347-360 (1990; Zbl 0722.53053)] it becomes clear that the hypersurface then must be a geodesic distance sphere, a horosphere, or a geodesic hypercylinder. So the conjecture in the beginning is true, and the additional assumptions in Theorems 2 and 4 are obsolete. In the compact case also constancy conditions on higher mean curvature functions are considered, assuming nonnegative Ricci curvature (Theorem 5). The proof for this is not given completely.
