Let \(A\), \(C\) be abelian groups with \(A[p]=0\). The following well-known sequence \[ 0\to\Hom(C,A)/p\cdot\Hom(C,A)\to\Hom(C/p\cdot C, A/p\cdot A)\to\hbox{Ext}(C,A)[p]\to 0 \] which generalizes a theorem of \textit{R. B. Warfield} [Arch. Math. 23, 145-150 (1972; Zbl 0244.20064)] is used to obtain relations between \(\hbox{Ext}(C,A)[p]\) and various Hom-groups. If \(A\) and \(C\) are torsion free then \(A\) dominates \(C\), if the outer type of \(C\) is less or equal to the inner type of \(A\). Different consequences and characterizations of this concept are given. Mainly it is shown that if \(A\) dominates \(C\), then \(\hbox{Ext}(C,A)\) is torsion free. The reverse direction does not hold in general, so consequences of \(\hbox{Ext}(C,A)[p]=0\) are derived.
