Let G be a reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field k. Let RAT(G) be the category of rational G-modules. An object \(V\in RAT(G)\) is called topheavy if either \(V=0\) or the socle of V is irreducible. Let \(G'\) be another group. A functor F: RAT(G)\(\to RAT(G')\) is called topheavy if F(V) is a topheavy \(G'\)-module whenever V is an irreducible G-module. Let H be a closed connected subgroup of G containing a maximal torus T of G. The author shows in the present paper that H is parabolic iff the restriction functor \((\)-)\(|_ H: RAT(G)\to RAT(H)\) is a topheavy functor. He also shows that in the case of \(char.k=0\), H is parabolic iff the induction functor \((\)-)\(|^ G_ H\) is topheavy, and then he conjectures that the last conclusion may be valid in all characteristics. This paper is a continuation of the author's previous paper [J. Algebra 121, 281-300 (1989; Zbl 0717.20030)] in which the author showed (at least in characteristic zero) that the parabolic subgroups of G can be characterized among all closed connected subgroups H containing T by a certain finiteness property of the induction functor \((\)-)\(|^ G_ H\) and its derived functors \(L^ n_{H,G}(\)-).
