Using Rouché's theorem the authors present a short and elegant proof of the following Theorem: Let Q(z) be a polynomial of degree n having all its zeros in \(| z| \leq 1\) and let P(z) be a polynomial of degree \(\leq n\). If \(| P(z)| \leq | Q(z)|\) holds for all \(| z| =1\), then for each \(\beta\in {\mathbb{C}}\), \(| \beta | \leq 1\) \[ | \frac{zP'(z)}{n}+\beta \frac{P(z)}{2}| \leq | \frac{zQ'(z)}{n}+\beta \frac{Q(z)}{2}| \] holds for all \(| z| =1\). The special case \(Q(z)=z^ n\) and \(\beta =-1\) yields an inequality from which Bernstein's theorem on trigonometric polynomials follows immediately: \[ If\quad T(t)=\sum^{n}_{\nu =-n}c_{\nu}e^{i\nu t}\quad satisfies\quad \max_{t\in {\mathbb{R}}}| T(t)| =1,\quad then\quad | T'(t)| \leq n \] holds for all \(t\in {\mathbb{R}}\). Besides, the authors give a short proof on Bernstein's theorem on the derivative of a polynomial.
