This article is concerned with algebraic geometric codes associated to effective divisors on a smooth projective curve of genus \(g\) over the finite field \(\mathbb{F}_ q\) with \(q=p^ \ell\), in particular with their subfield codes of words with coordinates in \(\mathbb{F}_ p\). If either the length of the code or the exponent \(\ell\) is large enough the author determines the dimension of the subfield codes and estimates the minimum distance from above. For \(p=2\) and \(g=0\) this implies that the designed distance for BCH and Goppa codes is indeed the minimum distance.
