A full Lie point symmetry analysis of rational difference equations is performed. Nontrivial symmetries are derived, and exact solutions using these symmetries are obtained. Among others, the authors study and solve the difference equations \[ x_{n+1}=\frac{x_{n-5}}{a_n+b_nx_{n-1}x_{n-3}x_{n-5}}\,, \] where \(\{a_n\}_{n\in \mathcal{N}_0}\) and \(\{b_n\}_{n\in \mathcal{N}_0}\) are arbitrary sequences, and \[ x_{n+1}=\frac{x_{n-4}x_{n-3}x_{n-2}}{x_{n-1}x_{n}(\lambda+\mu x_{n-4}x_{n-3}x_{n-2})}\,, \] where \(\lambda, \mu\in{\mathbb R}\). Note that the latter equation was solved by \textit{S. Stević} et al. [J. Comput. Anal. Appl. 20, No. 7, 1214--1227 (2016; Zbl 1339.39016)] with a different method.
