An imperfect interface model of two-dimensional isotropic homogeneous thermoelastostatics is used to study the effect of a compliant interphase layer on thermal stresses in an infinite matrix with an elliptic inclusion subject to a uniform temperature change. For such a model the tractions are continuous but displacements are discontinuous across the interface. Using complex variable techniques, the authors obtain infinite series representations for displacements and stresses, and analyze the peak interfacial stress as a function of parameter \(h\) describing the interface layer. In particular, the authors establish a non-monotonic character of peak interfacial stress function for an elliptic inclusion with relatively small aspect ratio.
