In the paper under consideration, flexural and torsional waves propagation in locally resonant thin walled beams with an open cross section is studied. The authors investigated the dispersive properties of the beam, focusing on coupled flexural-torsional waves. In order to do this a homogenization approach has been employed deriving a simplified closed form expression of the dispersive equation of the infinite locally resonant beam. It has been found that the band gaps are the frequency regions where the matrix of the homogenized inertial properties is negative definite. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that band gaps arise when translational and torsional resonators are simultaneously connected to the beam and are tuned to the same frequency. Numerical example illustrates the obtained theoretical results.
