For each subset \(K \subseteq [n] = \{1,\ldots,n\}\), the partial flag variety \(\mathcal{F}\ell(K;n)\) consists of the set of flags \(V_{k_1} \subsetneq V_{k_2} \subsetneq \cdots \subsetneq V_{k_d}\) where \(V_{k_i}\) is a \(k_i\)-dimensional vector subspace of \(\mathbb{C}^n\). For example, the Grassmannian \(\operatorname{Gr}(k,n)\) is a partial flag variety. In the paper, the authors study toric degenerations of partial flag varieties arising from matching fields. A matching field can be thought of as a modification of the Plücker embedding to a monomial map which sends each Plücker variable \(p_I\) to a single term of \(\det (X_I)\), where \(X_I\) is the submatrix of the \((n-1)\times n\) matrix of indeterminates index by \(I\). A main result of the paper states that: a matching field whose matching field polytope is combinatorial mutation equivalent to the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope gives rise to a toric degeneration of the partial flag variety. They also perform computations to find all matching fields that give rise to toric degenerations of the Grassmannian \(\operatorname{Gr}(3,6)\) and \(\operatorname{Gr}(3,7)\) and give a conjecture for the general Grassmannians.
