The author studies surfaces with positive defined second fundamental form in a Riemannian, three-dimensional warped product space. The main result consists in a formula expressing the Gaussian curvature with respect to the new metric on the surface in terms of the Gaussian and mean curvature of the first fundamental form (Section 3). This formula is used to give some characterizations of compact, totally umbilical surfaces (Section 4).
