The authors consider a system of second order ODEs modelling damped vibration. Under suitable conditions on the coefficients of the equation they prove the existence of at least one nontrivial fast homoclinic solution. In contrast to previous results they do not assume periodicity for one of the coefficient functions. The main ingredient for the proof is a classical ``mountain pass'' argument.
