The authors study the moduli of smoothness of a function in the variable exponent space \(\mathcal{M}_{p(.), \lambda(.)} (I_0)\) on a bounded interval where \(p\) is continuous, \(\lambda \) is measurable and both are subject to additional natural conditions. The main result shows that the modulus \(\Omega^r\) is equivalent to the \(K\)-functional \(K_r\) between the Morrey space above and the corresponding \(r^{\mathrm{ th}}\) order homogeneous Sobolev-Morrey space. As an application, an extension theorem of Whitney-type is obtained.
