In the paper under review the author gives a new proof for Brown's representability theorem. This new proof applies to more general situations than usual. Let \(G\) be a set of objects of a triangulated category \(D\) and let \(M(G)\) be the class of all regular infinite cardinal numbers \(\kappa\) so that there exists a full triangulated subcategory \(C (\kappa)\) of \(D\) which is closed under coproducts of size less than \(\kappa\), contains a small subcategory to which it is equivalent and has the property that for all \(A\in G\) and all \(X\in C(\kappa)\) one gets that the cardinality of \(\text{Hom}_D(A,X)\) is less than \(\kappa\). The main theorem is the following. Let \(D\) be a triangulated category with coproducts of arbitrary size. If there is a cardinal number \(\kappa\) and a set of objects \(G\) so that \(D\) is the smallest full triangulated subcategory of \(D\) closed under coproducts of size up to \(\kappa\), and contains arbitrary coproducts of objects of \(G\). Suppose moreover, that \(M(G)\) is a proper class. Then \(D\) satisfies Brown's representability theorem. As consequence the author proves that the unbounded derived category of a Grothendieck category exists and satisfies Brown's representability theorem. Moreover, for a certain type of subcategories \(T\) of a Grothendieck category \(A\) the embedding of the derived category \(D_T (A)\) of complexes of \(A\) having homology in \(T\) has a right adjoint, and \(D_T (A)\) satisfies Brown's representability theorem. It should be observed that recently \textit{J. D. Christensen}, \textit{B. Keller} and \textit{A. Neeman} [Topology 40, No. 6, 1339-1361 (2001; Zbl 0997.18007)] gave a ring \(R\) so that Brown's representability theorem does not hold for the derived category of \(R\).
