A free boundary problem for the inviscid two-phase (gas-fluid) flow with moving physical vacuum boundary is studied in one space dimension, extending the results of \textit{D. Coutand} and \textit{S. Shkoller} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 64, No. 3, 328--366 (2011; Zbl 1217.35119)]. First, a suitable transformation brings this degenerate and characteristic hyperbolic system of conservation laws to a form where a special degenerate parabolic approximation can be used. Then, delicate uniform energy estimates are derived which permit the author to prove the existence and uniqueness of the local-in-time weak solutions.
