A cylinder in a normal algebraic variety~\(X\) defined over a field~\(\Bbbk\) is a Zariski open subset \(U\subset X\) of the form \(Z\times\mathbb{A}^1_\Bbbk\). Given a morphism \(f\colon X\to Y\), a cylinder \(U\subset X\) is vertical if \(f|_U\) factors through the projection \(Z\times\mathbb{A}^1_\Bbbk\to Z\). The authors show that a del Pezzo fibration \(\pi\colon V\to W\) over \(\mathbb{C}\) admits a vertical cylinder if and only if its degree \(\deg(V/W)\ge5\) (i.e., the degree of a generic fiber) and \(\pi\) has a rational section. (Although it is not clear from the statement, a further assumption used in the proof seems to be that the Picard number of the generic fiber over the function field \(\mathbb{C}(W)\) is assumed to be \(1\).) Then, lifting the verticality requirement, they construct examples of del Pezzo fibrations \(\pi\colon V\to\mathbb{P}^1\) of any degree \(d\le4\) containing \(\mathbb{A}^3_\mathbb{C}\) (which is obviously a cylinder, but no longer vertical).
